BlackRock Adds Bitcoin to $130B Model Portfolios

February 28, 2025ai

In a milestone for institutional adoption, BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has for the first time incorporated Bitcoin exposure into its flagship model portfolios. A late February report reveals BlackRock added a 1–2% allocation of its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) – a spot Bitcoin ETF – to certain target-allocation models that guide thousands of financial advisors.

While a small slice, BlackRock's model portfolios total around $130 billion, so this move could channel significant new capital into BTC indirectly. Executives noted growing arguments for Bitcoin's long-term investment merit as "digital gold" and a hedge, especially after U.S. spot BTC ETFs launched. BlackRock's endorsement is seen as a "big deal" that may prompt other institutions and portfolio managers to follow suit.
