The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) confirmed plans to roll out a blockchain-based Digital Dirham (central bank digital currency) by late 2025. Announced by the CBUAE Governor Khaled Balama, the digital dirham will operate alongside cash and be accepted across all payment channels.

The CBDC is designed to enhance financial stability, improve inclusion, and combat financial crime, while also spurring fintech innovation in new digital products and services. Part of a broader UAE strategy for a digital economy, the Digital Dirham will leverage cutting-edge blockchain tech to reduce transaction costs and increase cross-border efficiency once implemented.
